About SecurMed UK
SecurMed UK is the not-for-profit company set up to establish the UK Medicines Verification System as required under the Delegated Regulation of the EU Falsified Medicines Directive. SecurMed UK was incorporated in July 2016.
The Falsified Medicines Directive introduces the requirement for all prescription only medicines packaging to carry additional safety features in the form of an anti-tamper device on the packaging, additional human readable information and a special machine readable 2D matrix containing unique information about the medicine pack. The data encoded into the 2D matrix is uploaded into a central European system and distributed to the UK market to enable community pharmacies, hospitals, GPs, health centres and wholesalers to perform verifications that supplied medicine packs are genuine before dispense to patients. Details of UK market medicine packs are stored within the UK Medicines Verification System (a national repository database).
SecurMed UK has been set up as a joint venture by the pharmaceutical industry associations representing branded manufacturers, generic manufacturers, parallel distributors, large wholesalers and community pharmacies as detailed in the diagram below. SecurMed UK is supervised by the UK National Competent Authorities, represented by the Department of Health & Social Care (DHSC) and the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA):
Our governing industry associations forming the SecurMed UK board are:
Association of British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI)
ABPI represents innovative research-based biopharmaceutical companies; large, medium and small, leading an exciting new era of biosciences in the UK. We represent companies who supply more than 80 per cent of all branded medicines used by the NHS and who are researching and developing the majority of the current medicines pipeline, ensuring that the UK remains at the forefront of helping patients prevent and overcome diseases.
British Generic Manufacturers Association (BGMA)
The BGMA represents the interests of UK based manufacturers and suppliers of generic medicines and promotes the development of the generic medicines industry in the United Kingdom. The BGMA is made up of members of the generic manufacturing industry, who between them account for more than 90% of the total UK market by volume.
British Association of European Parallel Distributors (BAEPD)
The BAEPD represents the interests of UK based parallel distributors. Parallel distributors are registered as pharmaceutical wholesalers who supply the intra-European market (often called ‘exporters’) or who place medicines from another country market in their market of destination (often called ‘importers’) who must in addition hold a manufacturing authorisation for the necessary repackaging. BAEPD represents the largest parallel distributors in the UK amounting to approximately 90% of the parallel distribution market by volume.
Healthcare Distribution Association (HDA)
The Healthcare Distribution Association represents the larger pharmaceutical wholesalers and distributors who supply over 90% of NHS medicines to hospitals, community pharmacies and doctors dispensaries throughout the four countries of the UK. The HDA promotes the comprehensive medicines wholesaling, distribution and associated services provided by member companies, in order to ensure resilience and certainty for patients, manufacturers and healthcare institutions. HDA’s guiding principle is to deliver “the right treatment, to the right place, and at the right time”.
National Pharmacy Association (NPA)
The National Pharmacy Association is the trade association for independent community pharmacy owners in the UK. The NPA aim is to support independent community pharmacies to succeed professionally and commercially for the benefit of their patients. NPA is a not-for-profit organisation committed to reinvesting in service provision.
Company Chemists’ Association (CCA)
The Company Chemists’ Association is the trade association for large pharmacy operators in England, Scotland and Wales. The CCA vision is that everyone, everywhere, can benefit from world class healthcare and wellbeing services provided by their community pharmacy.
National Competent Authorities:
Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA)
MHRA is one of the 28 agencies of DHSC and regulates medicines, medical devices and blood components for transfusion in the UK. Recognised globally as an authority in its field, the agency plays a leading role in protecting and improving public health and supports innovation through scientific research and development.
